Kefir Grains is a unique fermented milk drink, used for many generations in Central Asia and revered for its health promoting properties especially in Digestion.

The Best Kefir can be produced only by traditional methods at home and only from original grains.  The grains, which are a creamy white colour and shaped like small cauliflower(See the picture), are a circa 5000 year old bacterial culture, ooriginating from the people living in the Caucasian Mountains.

These Kefir Grains are a complex symbiotic colony containing more than 35 probiotic bacteria proven highly beneficial to people who drink products made from them.

What makes Kefir a true wonder?

The Fermentation of milk(Raw where possible) with the living Kefir Grains enhances its nutritional value increasing amounts of B vitamins, and important fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and folic acid.

Kefir is a good source of the valuable minerals calcium, phosphorus and magnesium – which are easily absorbed into the body. Noticeable results from drinking kefir can include an increase in energy, stronger nails, good skin and shiny, stronger hair and these are all benefits of an improved digestion system.

The Key is that they are easily absorbed. Even though it may say on the packet of food the vitamin or mineral content usually we are getting such a small amount of it absorbed in our body it can be a waste of time. This is why Kefir is a Wonder Food(step up from superfood).

Candida Kefir

Candida is a nasty many people have and don’t know it. It has been known to cause infections, lower energy levels and be a nasty all around. You can use Kefir to help fix it.

You should start by making some kefir (Kefir Recipes Below). To start off you will need to drink a 4 ounce glass per day for the first 2 weeks. This gets you the probiotics working through out your body to create a flow to your digestive system.

Along with drinking kefir, your diet should consist of high fiber vegetables and protein along with 7 – 10 big glasses of water(Wanted to be different from the 8 a day rule..Who came up with that anyway). This helps to clear out your colon as well which is a big plus.

Kefir Recipes

  • A 1000ml glass jar like a seal-able jug
  • About a tablespoon of kefir culture
  • Fresh Raw Organic Milk

In this Kefir Recipe you need to put the Kefir Grains in the glass jug, you then need to fill it with fresh the  milk(Raw and Organic if possible) about 2/3 or so full. Cover the jar with a cloth or put the lid on the jar. This is to stop pressure escaping.

Let the jug stand at room temperature for about 24 hours the consistency will change based on the legnth of time it is allowed to stand. 48 hours will make a thicker and more sour kefir, 12 hours a much thinner, sweeter kefir(Well as sweet as kefir can get). The warmer the temperature the quicker the kefir will ferment so keep an eye on it and test it out.

The Kefir Grains will float to the top of the jug which you can strain off in to a clean jar. It is always a good idea to stir it gently with a wooden spoon to mix up the solids and liquids to make it easier to strain as you will see it separate. The culture will feel different to the liquid portion. The grains will grow over time. It is common practice to give additional Kefir Grains to friends and family(or some people sell them on ebay).

Kefir Grains In Jug GraphicThe grains may be covered in a gel like substance known as kefiran. Let this drip off and it will help for a more think Kefir mixture.

After straining, the grains are placed straight back into a clean jar. You do not need to wash them off. It is then time to make your next batch.

It is really as easy as that. Once you get in the habit of making the mixture daily it is easy to continue with. One of my favourite Kefir Recipes is a smoothie.

To make this Blend up a glass of Kefir(to taster) with 2 Bananas, 1 table spoon of Raw Cacao Powder, 3 pinch’s of Stevia and if you want to go crazy some Frozen Strawberries. This is a great drink and is filled with health giving properties.

Good Luck with Kefir and leave any other idea’s in the comment section below. :-)
