A Question I am Asked a lot is what are Slow Carbs Fast Carbs? and how do you tell the difference?
With a big hunt over the web and a bit of self education(as I am learning about the Slow Carb Diet at the moment)
Just so you know Slow Carbs is not based on the speed it grows, rolls down a hill or is eaten by your children. Slow Carbs(Carbohydrates) are Carbs that break down over a slower period and create energy at a set speed. The Biggest difference in the Slow Carbs Fast Carbs battle is that the Slower Carbs are there to Keep your Blood Sugar stable. When you are on a Fat loss Diet like myself this is what you want.
On the other end of the stick you have Fast Carbs(Carbohydrates). Fast Carbs as the name suggest break down much quicker in the body. Usually giving a very quick energy response (but this does lower over time as you get accustomed to it). The biggest problem and you will read this a lot in the 4 Hour Body is you must have lower insulin release in your body. Although you must have Insulin when you have too much flowing through your body it does not just do the initial job which is to push energy in to the bloodstream. It ends up helping with the storage of excess energy(in simple terms) as fat.
Now when we talk about a Slow Carb Diet from What I have seen they talk about items under a 30 GI level. There are a few exceptions to the rule (E.g. Milk is 27 but induces a high insulin response so is not included).
To give you a table of different foods here is some.
| Food | GI |
| Brown Rice Pasta | 92 |
| Cornflakes | 83 |
| Waffles | 76 |
| Potato Mashed | 70 |
| Whole Meal Bread | 69 |
| Croissant | 67 |
| Steamed Potato | 65 |
| Cheese Pizza | 60 |
| Bananas | 54 |
| Rice, Boiled | 48 |
| Snickers Bar | 40 |
| Whole Milk | 27 |
| Peanuts | 15 |
| Snow Peas | 15 |
| Zucchini | 15 |
| Tomatoes | 15 |
| Cauliflower | 15 |
| Broccoli | 15 |
| Spinach | 15 |
This is just a small segment but gives you an idea of what foods fit where. Slow Carb Diets are really focused on keeping your insulin levels in check thus pick from the lower end of the scale.
Kind of makes sense doesn’t it.
Even if you are not in to the Slow Carb Way you can see the benefit of thinking more about Slow Carb.
I hope this gives you a bit of an understanding on this principle
